At the end of July 2022, the world's largest trade fair for organic products will take place in Nuremberg. Within the framework of this fair, a large congress with numerous lectures will also take place on several days. Within the framework of this congress, the project “German-Ukrainian Cooperation on Organic Agriculture” will hold a 90-minute event on 27 July 2022 on the topic "Organic farming in Ukraine 5 months after the beginning of the war - status quo and outlook".
Shortly after the outbreak of war on 02/24/22, the COA project initiated a fundraising campaign with the Future Foundation for Agriculture to provide the necessary support for the organic farms, which continue to farm under difficult conditions and produce organic food.
War has been raging in Ukraine since 24 February. Since then, COA's main focus has been on securing the team and the staff of the partner organisations. Despite the war, it was possible to maintain permanent contact with all colleagues in the partner institutions. Every day we have an online meeting with all the German projects funded by the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL) and the staff in and outside Ukraine.
On Feb 9 and 10, the project „German-Ukrainian cooperation in organic agriculture“ (COA) implemented a virtual study tour. The training was specifically designed for representatives of the competent authorities who are in charge of controlling organic operators and of monitoring the work of the inspectors in Ukraine. The intensive and varied event included a balanced mix of presentations, videos and time for questions and answers. It was designed to show similarities as well as to point out differences between the Ukrainian system and the one in the EU / Germany. The COA team leader Dr. Stefan Dreesmann, who used to lead a competent authority with controlling tasks related to the organic sector, was supported by the international experts Elisabeth Rüegg and Dirk Scholz.
On 12.01.2022 the first examinations for the future inspectors according to the Ukrainian Law on Organic Agriculture took place. 22 participants took part in the examination. All participants passed the exam. "This is another milestone on the way to the full implementation of the Ukrainian Organic Agriculture Law", says Dr Stefan Dreesmann, head of the project "German-Ukrainian Cooperation in Organic Agriculture". " We congratulate all those who contributed to it with this important step," Dr Dreesmann continued. Previously, COA had proposed a list of questions to the responsible Ministry of Economy (MinEcon) for the tests.
After the implementation of the Ukrainian law on organic farming, the regional consumer protection authorities will be responsible for numerous new tasks. This includes the control of the organic inspection bodies, the monitoring of the correct labeling of the products in the food retail trade as well as random checks of the organically certified farms and processors. In preparation for these tasks, the Ukrainian Ministry of Economy (MinEcon) and the Ukrainian Consumer Protection Authority (SSUFSCP) decided to carry out a model project and selected the responsible regional consumer protection authority in Poltava for this. The model project was inspired by the “German-Ukrainian Cooperation in Organic Agriculture (COA)” project. The model project is being implemented jointly by the Consumer Protection Authority in Poltava and COA. The COA project is financed by the German Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL).
On 18 September, the XIII All Ukrainian Organic Products Fair was held at the Expo site VDNG in Kyiv. As in previous years, the fair was organized by the Organic Federation of Ukraine and again supported by the Project «German-Ukrainian Cooperation on Organic Agriculture» (COA).
On the initiative of the Ministry of Economy of Ukraine, within the framework of the implementation of the Law of Ukraine No. 2496-VIII "On Basic Principles and Requirements for Organic Production, Circulation and Labeling of Organic Products", on August 31, 2021, the Second online webinar on the creation of the State Register of Organic Seeds and Planting Material in Ukraine was held – with the joint support of the Project "German-Ukrainian Cooperation in Organic Agriculture" (COA) and the Swiss-Ukrainian Program “Higher Value Added Trade from the Organic and Dairy Sector in Ukraine” (QFTP).
On the joint initiative of the Ministry of Economy of Ukraine, the Project "German-Ukrainian Cooperation in Organic Agriculture" (COA) and the Swiss-Ukrainian Program “Higher Value Added Trade from the Organic and Dairy Sector in Ukraine” (QFTP) an online workshop was held on July 9, 2021 to discuss the establishment of the Register of Organic Seeds and Planting Material in Ukraine.
The Project "German-Ukrainian Cooperation in Organic Agriculture" (COA) has supported the implementation of the IX International Scientific-Practical Conference "Organic Production and Food Safety", which was organized on May 27-28, 2021 by the Polissya National University (former Shytomyr National Agricultural University), the Ukrainian Organic Federation and the Regional Association "Polissya Organic" as an online event.
