According to estimates by the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) - despite the ban on commercial cultivation - the proportion of genetically modified (GMO) soybeans in Ukraine is 50-65% of total production.

Appropriate tests have shown the cultivation of genetically modified soybeans in the regions of Poltava, Khmelnyzky, Kyiv, Kirovohrad, Shytomyr and Vinnytsia. The suspicion was expressed that small and medium-sized farmers would often use genetically modified seeds in order to save the corresponding costs for the use of herbicides. The use of GMO seeds is prohibited for organic farms. However, contamination can often not be ruled out during transport and storage.
